How to Design a Custom Engagement Ring (The Process at AJ's Jewelry)
You've decided to propose. You want the ring to be perfect — not just a ring pulled from a display case, but something that tells your story. Something she's never seen before, because it's never existed before.
That's exactly why couples across Queens, Brooklyn, and the greater NYC area have been coming to AJ's Jewelry for over 38 years. Since 1988, we've been transforming ideas — sometimes just a feeling, sometimes a detailed sketch — into one-of-a-kind engagement rings that become heirlooms.
If you've ever wondered what it actually looks like to design a custom engagement ring from scratch, this is your inside look at our process.
Why Go Custom in the First Place?
Walk into any chain jewelry store and you'll find plenty of beautiful rings. But a custom ring is fundamentally different. It's built around her — her style, her personality, the details that make your relationship unique.
It also means no compromising. You don't settle for "close enough" when you can have exactly right.
And the truth is: custom doesn't have to mean complicated or out of reach. Our team is built around making the process approachable for everyone, whether you walk in with a full vision or just a vague sense that you want something special.
Step 1: The Free Consultation
Every custom ring at AJ's starts with a conversation — and it doesn't cost you a thing.
During your complimentary consultation, you'll sit down with our team (which includes a GIA graduate and in-house craftsmen) and talk through what you're envisioning. Maybe you've been saving photos on Pinterest. Maybe you have a few rings you love but want to blend together. Maybe you just know you want a vintage feel with a modern twist. All of that is a perfectly fine place to start.
This is also where we talk budget. We believe in complete transparency with pricing — no surprises, no pressure. Whatever you're working with, we make it our job to help you create something stunning within that range.
"I came in as a 26 year old having no clue about what to look for in a ring and a diamond. Jordan and the staff walked me through everything and did not try to rip me off or make me feel dumb for not knowing the engagement ring process." — Google Review
Step 2: Design and CAD Rendering
Once we understand your vision, our team gets to work on the design using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software.
This is one of the most exciting parts of the process. You'll see a photorealistic, three-dimensional rendering of your ring before a single piece of metal is cast. This gives you the ability to review every angle, suggest adjustments, and truly visualize what the finished piece will look like — all while there's still complete flexibility to make changes.
One of our past custom projects is a great example of what this looks like in practice: a client came in with details she loved from several different engagement rings and wanted them woven into a single, cohesive design. After weeks of collaborative designing, revising, and refining in CAD, the result was a ring that was entirely her own — you can see that piece and more of our past custom work here.
We don't move forward until you're in love with what you see on screen.

Step 3: Material Selection
With your design locked in, it's time to select the materials that will bring it to life.
The Metal The most common choices are:
- 14k or 18k Yellow Gold — timeless and warm, perfect for vintage-inspired designs
- White Gold — sleek and modern, lets the diamond take center stage
- Rose Gold — romantic and distinctive, increasingly popular for its unique warmth
- Platinum — the most durable option, with a naturally white sheen that never fades
The Center Stone This is often where the most conversation happens. We'll walk you through the 4 Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat), and help you find a stone that maximizes beauty within your budget. We offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds — a topic we're happy to explore with you in detail, as each has distinct advantages depending on your priorities.
If you'd like to incorporate an heirloom stone from a family piece, we can work with that too. In most cases, we can integrate existing diamonds or gemstones directly into your new custom ring — a beautiful way to carry forward a family legacy.

Step 4: Casting and Handcrafting
Once materials are finalized and the design is approved, our in-house craftsmen get to work.
The ring is cast in metal, then meticulously finished by hand. Stone setting, prong work, any engraving — all of it is done with careful attention to detail in our studio right here in Queens. This isn't outsourced overseas. It's made here, by people who take tremendous pride in what they create.
Step 5: The Reveal
Most custom pieces are completed within two to four weeks, though timelines vary based on design complexity, material sourcing, and shop scheduling — all things we'll walk you through at your consultation.
When the ring is ready, you'll come in for the reveal. It's one of our favorite moments. Seeing a client hold something for the first time that they designed from scratch — and knowing what it's about to mean to someone they love — never gets old.
