Thinking About a Custom Nameplate ? Read This Before You Order

There's a reason nameplate necklaces never really go out of style. A piece that spells out your name, your kid's name, or the name of someone you love isn't just an accessory,it's a small, wearable piece of identity. But not all nameplates are created equal, and a little bit of knowledge before you order can be the difference between a piece you wear every day for years and one that ends up in a drawer.

At AJ's Jewelry in Ridgewood, Queens, we've been designing and crafting personalized jewelry in-house since 1988. We've seen just about every question a first-time nameplate buyer can ask, so before you place your order, here's what we think you should know.

1. Not All Metals Wear the Same Way

Your nameplate is going to be worn against your skin, in the shower, at the gym, probably every single day. That means metal choice matters more than most people expect.

  • 14K Gold (yellow, white, or rose) is the gold standard — literally. It holds its shine, resists tarnish, and ages beautifully. It costs more upfront, but it's built to last decades, not seasons.

  • Sterling Silver is a great budget-friendly option and looks fantastic, especially in bolder or larger designs, but it will need occasional polishing to stay bright.

  • Gold-plated or vermeil pieces look like solid gold at first, but the plating can wear thin over time with daily use, especially at the letters where friction is highest.

If you want a piece you'll hand down someday, solid gold is worth the investment. If you're building a rotating jewelry box of fun, changeable pieces, sterling silver is a smart way to go.

2. Font and Style Change the Whole Personality of the Piece

This is the part people underestimate. The same name can look completely different depending on the lettering style:

  • Script/cursive styles feel classic, feminine, and romantic

  • Bold block or bubble letters feel modern and make a statement

  • Thin, delicate letters feel minimal and everyday-wearable

  • Retro-inspired lettering brings a vintage, throwback feel

Think about how often you'll wear the piece and with what. A delicate script necklace layers beautifully under other jewelry, while a bold letter design is meant to be the star of the outfit.

3. Length Matters More Than You'd Think

Nameplate necklaces typically sit right at the collarbone, and that "sweet spot" changes based on your neck size and how many letters are in the name. A short name on a chain that's too long will sit lower than expected; a long name on a short chain can feel crowded. When you order, always double check:

  • The number of letters in the name (this affects overall pendant width)

  • Your preferred chain length (16"–18" is most popular for a classic collarbone fit)

  • Whether you want an adjustable chain for flexibility

If you're not sure, our team is always happy to help you find the right proportions before you commit.

4. Cut-Out vs. Solid Letters

There are two main construction styles for nameplates:

  • Cut-out letters, where the name is cut from a solid sheet of metal, tend to feel more substantial and are a great choice for bold, block-style names.

  • Wire-style letters, soldered together stroke by stroke, are lighter and ideal for script and cursive designs.

Neither is "better",  it really depends on the look you're going for and how the name is styled.

5. Personalization Goes Beyond Just a Name

A nameplate doesn't have to be limited to a first name. Some of our most popular custom requests include:

  • A name paired with a small heart, star, or initial charm

  • A nickname or a name in another language

  • A child's name for a mom or dad's everyday piece

  • A couple's names or initials together

  • Birthstones added alongside the lettering

If you can picture it, our team can usually design it — and because we do our custom work in-house, right here in our Ridgewood studio, we can walk you through what's possible before you order anything.
