A Design Built Around Geometry and Intention
Some engagement ring visions are soft and romantic. Others are precise — defined by clean lines, deliberate geometry, and the confidence that comes from knowing exactly what you want. When this client came into AJ's Jewelry, the vision belonged firmly in the second category. A three-stone ring with a center diamond of genuine character, flanked by two trapezoid-cut natural diamonds that would frame it with architectural intentionality rather than simply fill the space on either side. A ring that would look as considered from across the room as it would up close.
Seeing the Center Stone First
Before a single design decision was made, the client came into our store to see the center stone in person. We had the 1.07 carat cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant diamond ready — and seeing it face up in real light made every subsequent design conversation more focused and more certain.
The cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant is a shape with a great deal of visual sophistication. It carries the long, clean lines of a rectangular stone while its modified brilliant faceting — distinct from the step-cut faceting of a true emerald cut — produces a level of sparkle and light return that rectangular shapes do not always achieve. The cut corners give it an elegance and safety that a sharp-cornered stone lacks, and at just over a carat, it has a face-up presence that commands the setting built around it.
The stone was examined, appreciated, and confirmed. From that moment, the design was built around it.
Designing the Ring, Right Then and There
The moment the center stone was chosen, we sat down together and got to work on the design. The client's direction was clear: trapezoid-cut natural diamonds on each side, their angled geometry deliberately chosen to echo and frame the rectangular character of the center stone.
The trapezoid is one of the most architecturally intentional side stone choices in fine jewelry. Its angled sides taper toward the band, actively directing the eye toward the center stone rather than simply flanking it. Paired with a cut-cornered rectangular center diamond, the trapezoids create a trio that feels unified and deliberate — a three-stone composition where every element reinforces the geometric character of the others. The result is a ring that reads as modern and considered, with a precision of design that suits a client who arrived knowing exactly what they were after.
Built in 3D Using CAD Technology
With the design direction established in store, our team built the ring as a precise three-dimensional digital model using computer-aided design software — capturing every detail of the setting before production began.
The CAD model allowed every specification to be visualized and confirmed: the placement and proportions of the trapezoid diamonds on each side, the exact measurements of the band width and setting height, and how all three stones would relate to each other within the finished ring. Digital renderings of the ring were produced from multiple angles, giving the client an accurate and detailed preview of the finished piece from every perspective.
The client reviewed the renderings, confirmed that every element of the design was exactly as envisioned, and approved the ring for production. Only then did the piece move from the screen to the bench.
Cast in 14 Karat White Gold, Set by Hand
With the design approved, the ring was cast in 14 Karat White Gold — the natural choice for a ring whose beauty lies in the precision of its geometry. White gold's cool, bright tone allows the clean lines and angles of the three-stone composition to read with maximum clarity and definition, the metal receding behind the diamonds and letting the stones take complete precedence. The cut-cornered rectangular center and the trapezoid side stones all face up with brilliant contrast against the white gold setting — a unified field of light across a coherent geometric composition.
At 14 karats, the gold delivers the strength and durability the setting requires. Once cast and polished, the ring went to our bench jeweler for the hand-setting of all three natural diamonds — the center stone placed with the precision its modified brilliant faceting demands, the two trapezoid side stones matched for quality, clarity, and cut, each set individually by hand to ensure secure placement and maximum light return.
Final Polish and Inspection
With all three stones set, the ring underwent a final round of polishing — the white gold brought to a bright, reflective finish that sharpened the contrast between metal and diamond and gave the geometric composition of the ring the crisp, clean presentation it was designed to deliver.
Before the ring left our hands, every detail was inspected thoroughly: the alignment of the three stones, the symmetry of the trapezoid side diamonds on each side of the center stone, the finish of the band, and the security of every setting. The ring that went to the client was the ring that had been approved in the digital rendering — confirmed in every detail, executed without compromise.
The Finished Ring
The completed 14 Karat White Gold 3-Stone Natural Diamond Trapezoid Engagement Ring is a piece that rewards exactly the kind of deliberate, specific vision that produced it. The 1.07 carat cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant center diamond sits with presence and brilliance at the crown, the two trapezoid natural diamonds flanking it with geometric precision that makes the three-stone composition feel inevitable — as though these three stones were always meant to sit together in exactly this configuration.
In white gold, every line of the design is sharp and every angle is clean. It is a ring that looks as though it was planned — because it was, down to the last detail, by a client who knew exactly what they wanted and a team that took that vision seriously at every step.
