When this client came into AJ’s Jewelry, the occasion was clear: a custom pendant for a partner who loved hummingbirds. Not a hummingbird charm pulled from a display case, but something made from scratch, made specifically, and made to last. A pendant that would feel genuinely one of a kind because it was.
The concept was a hummingbird rendered in 14 karat yellow gold — detailed, graceful, and brought to life with round emerald stones set into the piece for a touch of color and brilliance that would make the finished pendant feel as alive as the bird it depicted.
From Image to Art: The Vector Process
Every custom pendant begins somewhere, and this one began with a photograph of a hummingbird. Rather than working from a generic outline or an existing template, we started with a specific image — one that captured the particular grace and detail of the bird in the way the client envisioned it — and built the entire pendant design from there.
The first step was converting that photograph into a precise vector file. Unlike a standard image, which is made up of pixels and loses definition when scaled or manipulated, a vector file is built from mathematically defined lines and curves — infinitely scalable, perfectly clean, and exact in every detail. Our team traced and rebuilt the hummingbird image into vector art, carefully refining every curve of the wings, every contour of the body, and every fine line of the tail feathers until the digital file was a clean, accurate, and production-ready representation of the design.
This step is what makes the difference between a pendant that looks handsome and one that looks exceptional. The quality of what comes out of production is only ever as good as the precision of what goes in.
Laser Engraved, Laser Cut — Down to the Last Detail
With the vector file finalized, the design went to our laser engraving and cutting machine — and this is where the pendant truly began to take physical form.
Using the vector art as its guide, the laser first engraved the fine surface detail of the hummingbird directly into the 14 karat yellow gold sheet — the delicate texture of the feathers, the definition of the wings, the character of the bird’s form captured in precise, clean lines that no hand tool could replicate at this level of consistency. The laser works with a degree of accuracy measured in fractions of a millimeter, allowing detail that would be extraordinarily difficult to achieve by hand to be rendered cleanly and repeatably in gold.
Once the engraving was complete, the laser then cut the pendant out of the gold sheet — following the exact outline of the vector file and producing a silhouette that was sharp, precise, and true to the original design. The combination of engraved surface detail and laser-cut outline gives the finished pendant a crispness and definition that sets it apart from cast or stamped alternatives.
Finished by Hand, Set With Emeralds
The laser does the precision work. The jeweler does everything that requires a human touch. Once the engraved and cut pendant came off the machine, it went directly to our bench jeweler for finishing — the work of refining edges, polishing surfaces, and bringing the piece to the standard of finish that 14 karat yellow gold demands.
Then came the emeralds. Round emerald stones were selected and hand-set into the pendant at the points in the design where they would add the most life and dimension — bringing a deep, vivid green into the composition that animates the hummingbird in a way that gold alone cannot. Emeralds and hummingbirds share a natural affinity: both are associated with lush, vibrant color, and the pairing here feels as though it was always meant to be. Each stone was set with care, secured precisely, and positioned to catch light in a way that draws the eye without overwhelming the delicacy of the engraved goldwork surrounding it.
