The client didn't arrive with a vague idea. One of the most significant advantages of wax carving for a project like this is something that digital renderings, however accurate, cannot fully replicate: the ability to hold the actual piece — at the actual scale it will be cast — before a single gram of gold is committed to production.
A digital rendering shows a client what a piece will look like. A wax carving shows a client what a piece will be — its physical presence in space, the way it sits in the hand, the scale at which the detail reads, the weight and dimension of the finished pendant before it exists in metal. For a pendant as dimensionally complex and detail-dependent as the Jason mask, this was not simply a convenience. It was essential.
The client was presented with the completed wax carving and was able to hold it, examine it from every angle, assess the scale and proportion of the mask, and confirm that every element of the design was exactly as he had envisioned before production moved to casting. The carving was approved. Then, and only then, did the pendant go into gold.
