The butterfly was the right choice for this piece in every way. From Outline to Vector: Building the Design
The process began with a butterfly outline — a specific silhouette chosen for the elegance of its wing shape and the way it would translate into gold. Like all of our laser-produced custom pendants, the design had to be converted into vector art before any production work could begin.
A vector file is built from mathematically precise lines and curves rather than pixels, which means it maintains perfect clarity and accuracy regardless of how it is scaled or manipulated. Our team took the butterfly outline and rebuilt it as clean vector art — refining the curves of the wings, ensuring the symmetry of the silhouette was exact, and preparing the file to the precise specifications our laser engraving and cutting machine requires.
This stage is foundational. The quality of the finished pendant depends entirely on the quality of the vector file that guides the production process. Every curve that is clean in the file becomes a clean curve in the gold. Every line that is precise in the artwork becomes a precise line in the pendant. There is no stage at which imprecision can be corrected after the fact — the work of getting it right happens here, before the machine ever touches the metal.
Laser Engraved, Laser Cut — Precise to the Last Curve
With the vector file prepared and approved, the design moved to our laser engraving and cutting machine — and the pendant began to take its physical form in 14 karat yellow gold.
The laser first engraved the surface detail of the butterfly into the gold sheet — the fine wing texture, the interior linework, and the client's niece's initial, rendered cleanly and precisely into the surface of the metal. Laser engraving produces a depth and consistency of line that hand engraving cannot always guarantee at this scale, ensuring that the initial reads clearly and the wing detail is sharp and uniform across the entire piece.
Once the engraving was complete, the laser then cut the butterfly silhouette out of the gold sheet — following the vector outline exactly and producing a clean, precise edge that defines the shape of the pendant with clarity and crispness. The result coming off the machine is a pendant that is already fully formed in its essential character: the right shape, the right detail, the right initial.
Finished by Hand
From the laser, the pendant went to our bench jeweler for the finishing work that transforms a precisely cut piece of gold into a piece of fine jewelry. Edges were refined, surfaces were polished, and the pendant was brought to the standard of finish that 14 karat yellow gold demands — warm, bright, and smooth in the hand.
This final stage of hand finishing is what elevates the piece from production to personal. The laser creates precision. The jeweler creates refinement. Together, they produce something that looks and feels as though it could only have been made for one person — because it was.
