Toi et Moi: The 14 Karat Yellow Gold Two-Stone Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring

A Ring That Broke the Mold

The Making of a Custom 14 Karat Yellow Gold Two-Stone Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring with a 5ct Emerald-Shaped Fancy Yellow Lab Grown Diamond

Most engagement rings are built around a single stone. One center diamond, one focal point, one undisputed subject of the setting. This client had a different vision entirely — a Toi et Moi ring that placed two diamonds side by side with equal intention, equal presence, and a contrast between them that made the combination more striking than either stone could be on its own. A 5 carat emerald-shaped fancy yellow lab grown diamond. A brilliant white lab grown diamond. Together, in 14 karat yellow gold, designed to be worn as a single unified statement.

It was a bold brief, and it produced a ring unlike anything we had built before.

The Toi et Moi: A Love Story in Two Stones

Toi et Moi — French for “you and me” — is one of the most romantically charged ring formats in the history of fine jewelry. Dating back centuries and famously worn by figures as iconic as Napoleon Bonaparte's Joséphine and more recently by some of the most style-conscious names in contemporary culture, the Toi et Moi places two stones side by side as equals — two distinct presences sharing a single band, neither subordinate to the other, their difference and their closeness both part of the meaning.

For an engagement ring, the symbolism couldn't be more fitting. Two people. Two stones. One ring. The Toi et Moi doesn't just look extraordinary — it says something, and it says it in the most direct and beautiful way jewelry can.

This client understood that immediately. What remained was choosing the two stones that would tell the right story.

Seeing the Stones First

Before a single design decision was confirmed, the client came into our store to see both stones in person — and seeing a 5 carat fancy yellow emerald-shaped diamond face up in real light is an experience that removes any remaining ambiguity about whether the vision is right.

Fancy yellow diamonds occupy a category entirely their own within the world of diamonds. Where a colorless diamond is prized for its neutrality — its ability to reflect and scatter light without introducing any color of its own — a fancy yellow diamond is prized for exactly the opposite reason. Its color is its character. At 5 carats in an emerald shape, the yellow diamond's long step-cut facets reflect light in broad, saturated planes of warm golden brilliance — present, luminous, and impossible to overlook.

The white lab grown diamond alongside it provided the counterpoint the Toi et Moi composition needed — its colorless brilliance creating a contrast with the yellow stone that made both appear more vivid and more defined than either would sitting alone. The two stones together produced exactly the balance and tension the client had envisioned: warm against cool, color against clarity, the emerald shape's architectural calm against the white diamond's explosive light return.

Both stones were examined, the pairing confirmed to be exactly as intended, and the design process began.

Designing the Ring, Right Then and There

The moment both stones were chosen, we sat down together and got to work. The Toi et Moi format required a design conversation that went beyond the typical single-stone engagement ring discussion — because in a two-stone ring, the relationship between the stones is as important as the stones themselves. Their relative size, the spacing between them, the way the setting would hold them in relation to each other — all of it needed to be deliberate and exactly right.

The client's direction was clear: the stones should sit side by side with a placement that felt intentional and balanced, the setting designed to hold both with the security and openness that would maximize their exposure to light without favoring one over the other. The 14 karat yellow gold band was specified from the beginning — and the reasoning was immediately apparent. Yellow gold does not compete with a fancy yellow diamond. It extends it, the warm tone of the metal deepening and reinforcing the richness of the stone's color while providing a backdrop that allows the white diamond's contrasting brilliance to read with maximum clarity.

Built in 3D Using CAD Technology

With the design direction confirmed, our team built the ring as a precise three-dimensional digital model using computer-aided design software — and for a Toi et Moi ring with stones of this scale and character, the CAD process was essential.

The relative placement and proportions of the two stones needed to be resolved in three dimensions before any production began. The 5 carat emerald-shaped yellow diamond and the white lab grown diamond are not identical in shape, size, or optical character — designing a setting that holds both with equal integrity while presenting them as a coherent pair required the kind of precise three-dimensional visualization that only CAD can provide at this stage of the process.

Digital renderings of the ring were produced from multiple angles, giving the client an accurate and detailed preview of how the two stones would sit together in the yellow gold Toi et Moi setting — the yellow diamond's elongated emerald shape alongside the white diamond, the prong configurations, the profile of the band, and the overall proportions of the complete ring. Every element of the composition was reviewed and confirmed before a single gram of gold was cast.

The design was approved. Production began.

Cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold, Set by Hand

With the CAD model approved, the ring was cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold — a choice that serves this Toi et Moi in ways that go well beyond aesthetics.

For a ring centered on a fancy yellow diamond, yellow gold is not simply a metal preference. It is a design decision with direct implications for how the stone reads in the finished piece. The warm, deep tone of yellow gold creates an environment in which the fancy yellow diamond's color intensifies — the metal and the stone reinforcing each other's warmth in a way that makes the yellow appear richer and more saturated than it would against a white or rose gold setting. Meanwhile, the white lab grown diamond sits against the same yellow gold backdrop and appears all the more brilliant for it — its colorless light reading with striking contrast against the warm metal and the colored stone beside it.

At 14 karats, the gold delivers the structural strength the two-stone prong setting requires — holding both diamonds securely and precisely through years of daily wear. Once cast and polished, the ring went to our bench jeweler for the careful hand-setting of both stones — the emerald-shaped fancy yellow diamond and the white lab grown diamond each placed individually, secured in prong settings designed to hold them firmly while keeping both stones as open and exposed to light as the design allowed.

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds in every measurable sense — chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined stones, certified and graded by the same gemological standards. The choice of lab grown for both stones in this ring reflects the same philosophy that guided every other decision: the highest possible quality and presence, without compromise.

Final Polish and Inspection

With both stones set, the ring underwent a final round of polishing — the 14 karat yellow gold brought to the warm, mirror-like finish that makes the contrast between the metal, the yellow diamond, and the white diamond most present and most striking. The prong settings were inspected for security and finish, the symmetry of the Toi et Moi composition was verified from every angle, and every surface of the ring was reviewed for the quality of craftsmanship a piece of this ambition demands.

The ring that left our hands was the ring that had been approved in the digital renderings and confirmed in the in-store design conversation — precise in its proportions, bold in its composition, and executed without compromise.

The Finished Ring

The completed 14 Karat Yellow Gold Toi et Moi Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring is a piece that makes its statement the moment it is seen. The 5 carat emerald-shaped fancy yellow lab grown diamond sits alongside the brilliant white lab grown diamond in warm yellow gold — the contrast between warm and cool, color and clarity, the emerald shape's architectural calm and the white diamond's explosive brilliance creating a Toi et Moi composition that is genuinely unlike any other engagement ring in the room.

You and me. Two stones. One ring. Worn together, meaning something that a single stone never could.

It is bold without being excessive. Distinctive without being difficult. A ring that required a client confident enough to look past convention and specific enough to know exactly what that confidence should look like in gold and diamonds.

This is what it looks like.
