Two Ideas That Belong Together
The Making of a Custom 14 Karat Yellow Gold 2ct Emerald Shape Hidden Halo Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring
The emerald cut and the hidden halo seem, on the surface, to be working from opposite design philosophies. The emerald cut is celebrated for its restraint — its long, clean step-cut facets reflecting light in broad, architectural planes, its beauty rooted in clarity and calm rather than the explosive brilliance of a round or cushion cut. The hidden halo, meanwhile, is a detail built entirely on brilliance — a border of small diamonds tucked beneath the center stone, adding light and dimension from below while leaving the face of the ring clean and uninterrupted above.
Put them together, and the result is a ring that is more sophisticated than either element on its own. The emerald cut's clean geometry viewed from above. The hidden halo's glow revealed in profile. A ring that looks like a classic solitaire at a glance and reveals its secret to anyone who looks from the side.
When this client came into AJ's Jewelry with that exact combination in mind, we knew immediately that the design was going to be exceptional.
Seeing the Stone First
Before any design details were discussed or confirmed, the client came into our store to see the center stone in person. We had the 2 carat emerald-shaped lab grown diamond ready — and seeing it face up in real light made every subsequent conversation more grounded and more certain.
The emerald cut is among the most transparent shapes in the diamond vocabulary. Its open, windowed table and step-cut facets leave nowhere for a stone to hide — its color, its clarity, and the quality of its cut are all on full, unmediated display in a way that brilliant cuts, with all their scattering light, can partially obscure. At 2 carats, an emerald cut has a commanding rectangular presence on the finger — long, clean, and immediately distinctive, a stone that reads as considered and confident in equal measure.
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds — chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined stones, graded by the same gemological standards. Choosing a lab grown emerald shape allowed this client to access a 2 carat stone of exceptional clarity and quality — exactly the kind of transparency the emerald cut demands — without compromise.
The stone was examined, its quality confirmed, and the design conversation began.
Designing the Ring, Right Then and There
The moment the center stone was chosen, we sat down together and got to work. The client's vision was specific and clear from the first exchange: an emerald-shaped lab grown diamond above a hidden halo, set in 14 karat yellow gold, with a band profile that kept the overall aesthetic clean and refined rather than ornate.
The hidden halo was a particularly thoughtful choice for an emerald cut center stone. A traditional visible halo — sitting above the band and surrounding the stone at crown level — would interrupt the clean rectangular geometry of the emerald cut when viewed from above, adding a round or cushion-shaped frame around a stone whose entire character lies in its rectangular precision. The hidden halo avoids this entirely. Tucked beneath the crown of the emerald cut, invisible from above, it adds brilliance and perceived size to the stone without placing any visual element in competition with the clean lines of the cut. The emerald reads as a solitaire from above. The halo reveals itself from the side — a glowing rim of light that makes the stone appear to float above the band with a warmth and depth that a plain solitaire simply does not achieve.
Every remaining detail — the prong configuration, the profile and width of the yellow gold band, the size and spacing of the hidden halo diamonds — was worked through carefully before the design moved to the digital phase.
Built in 3D Using CAD/CAM Technology
With the design fully confirmed in store, our team built the ring as a precise three-dimensional digital model using CAD/CAM — computer-aided design and manufacturing — technology. For a ring where the relationship between the emerald cut and the hidden halo needed to be resolved with geometric exactness, the digital design stage was not simply a useful step. It was where the design was proven.
The hidden halo needed to follow the rectangular perimeter of the emerald cut with precision — wrapping the long sides and the cut corners of the stone in a continuous border of diamonds that conformed to the shape of the center stone rather than defaulting to a circular or oval halo form. Achieving this required the kind of three-dimensional modeling that CAD provides — the exact curvature of the halo, the size and spacing of each diamond within it, and the distance between the halo and the base of the emerald cut all resolved digitally before any gold was committed to production.
Digital renderings of the ring were produced from multiple angles — top view, front view, and angled view — allowing the client to see exactly how the emerald cut's clean face-up appearance would be complemented by the hidden halo's glow from the side, and confirming that every proportion of the finished ring was exactly right. The client reviewed the renderings in detail, approved every element of the design, and the ring moved into production.
Cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold, Set by Hand
With the CAD/CAM model approved, the ring was cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold — a choice that serves this particular combination of emerald cut and hidden halo beautifully and deliberately.
Yellow gold brings a warmth to the emerald cut that the step-cut facets reflect in a particularly rich way. Where a brilliant cut scatters light in every direction, the emerald cut's broad facet planes reflect it in wide, deliberate flashes — and in yellow gold, those flashes carry the warmth and depth of the metal as well as the brilliance of the diamond. The result is a light return that feels richer and more substantial than the same stone in a white metal, the yellow gold adding a dimension of color to what is otherwise a study in restraint.
The hidden halo, set in yellow gold beneath the emerald cut, adds its glow with the same warmth — the small lab grown diamonds within it reflecting both their own brilliance and the warm tone of the metal, creating a perimeter of light that feels organic and luxurious rather than cool and clinical.
At 14 karats, the gold delivers the structural integrity the setting demands for daily wear. Once cast and polished, the ring went to our bench jeweler for the hand-setting of every stone — the 2 carat emerald-shaped lab grown diamond placed at the crown with the precision the cut requires, and the hidden halo diamonds set individually around the rectangular perimeter of the stone's base, each one secured to contribute to the continuous border of brilliance visible in profile.
Final Polish and Inspection
With all stones set, the ring underwent a final round of polishing — the 14 karat yellow gold brought to the warm, rich finish that gives the metal its depth and character. The hidden halo was inspected from the side to confirm its glowing effect beneath the emerald cut was precisely as the digital rendering had shown — a continuous border of light that lifted the stone above the band and revealed itself fully in profile without interrupting the clean face-up view of the emerald cut above.
The prong settings were checked for security and elegance, the alignment of the emerald-shaped center stone was verified for precision within the setting, and every surface of the ring was reviewed for the quality of craftsmanship a piece of this subtlety and intention demands.
The ring that left our hands was the ring the client had approved — the clean architecture of the emerald cut intact from above, the hidden halo's secret exactly as intended from the side.
The Finished Ring
The completed 14 Karat Yellow Gold 2ct Emerald Shape Hidden Halo Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring is a ring that rewards every decision made in its design. The 2 carat emerald-shaped lab grown diamond occupies the crown with the quiet authority the cut is known for — its long rectangular facets reflecting light in broad, clean planes against the warm yellow gold below. From above, it reads as a refined, architectural solitaire. From the side, the hidden halo reveals itself in a warm glow of brilliant light that changes the character of the ring entirely — adding depth, dimension, and a brilliance that the emerald cut's geometry alone would not produce.
Two design philosophies. One ring. Each one making the other better.
