A Ring Seen Online. A Ring Made From Scratch.
The Making of a Custom 14 Karat Yellow Gold 5ct Elongated Cushion Hidden Halo Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring
There is a particular kind of engagement ring client that we love working with — the one who arrives with an image saved on a phone, a ring they discovered while scrolling, and a specific list of ways they want to make it more theirs. When this client came into AJ's Jewelry, the inspiration was already in hand: a hidden halo engagement ring with a distinctive band featuring alternating round and marquise-shaped accent stones. The design appealed immediately. But the center stone was wrong. The center stone was always going to be a 5 carat elongated cushion-cut lab grown diamond — and around that stone, the rest of the ring would be designed from the ground up.
Seeing the Stone First
Before a single design detail was revisited or refined, the client came into our store to meet the center stone in person. We had the 5 carat elongated cushion-cut lab grown diamond ready — and at that size, in that cut, seeing it face up in real light is an experience that makes every subsequent design decision feel both more exciting and more certain.
The elongated cushion is a shape with an extraordinary combination of qualities. Its cushion cut origins give it rounded corners and a soft, warm character that a rectangular stone does not always achieve. Its elongated proportions give it the finger-lengthening visual reach of a more linear shape, spreading its considerable 5 carat weight across a generous face-up surface area that commands the setting around it. The brilliant faceting of the cushion cut ensures that all of that size comes with extraordinary light return — a 5 carat elongated cushion does not merely sit on a ring. It fills a room with light.
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds in every measurable sense — chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined stones, certified and graded by the same gemological standards. At 5 carats in an elongated cushion cut, the quality of the lab grown diamond selected for this ring was exceptional, and seeing it in person confirmed that the center stone the client had always envisioned was exactly right.
The stone was confirmed. The design conversation began.
Designing the Ring, Right Then and There
The moment the stone was chosen, we sat down together and got to work — using the online inspiration image as the starting point and refining every element until the design was specifically this client's rather than a reproduction of something seen on a screen.
The hidden halo was central to the appeal from the beginning. Tucked beneath the crown of the elongated cushion, invisible from above but revealing itself in profile as a glowing border of brilliant light, the hidden halo adds brilliance and visual lift to the center stone without interrupting the clean, uncluttered face-up view of the cushion's table. For an elongated cushion of this size and quality, the hidden halo is the ideal complement — adding without announcing, enhancing without competing.
The band detail was equally specific: alternating round and marquise-shaped accent stones running along the shank, their combination of shapes creating a rhythm and visual interest along the band that a standard pavé or plain band does not achieve. Round diamonds and marquise diamonds in alternation produce a pattern that feels both intentional and distinctive — the marquise shapes adding a pointed elegance between the round stones that makes the band as interesting to look at as the center stone above it.
Every element of the design was worked through in detail, with the online reference as a guide and the client's specific preferences as the final word on every decision.
Built in 3D Using CAD/CAM Technology
With the design fully established, our team built the ring as a precise three-dimensional digital model using CAD/CAM — computer-aided design and manufacturing — technology. For a ring with the level of detail this design demanded, the digital modeling stage was not simply a useful step. It was an essential one.
The hidden halo needed to be modeled with precision — its position beneath the elongated cushion, the size and spacing of the diamonds within it, and the way it would interact with the base of the center stone's setting all required three-dimensional resolution before production could begin. The alternating round and marquise accent stones on the shank needed to be visualized in their actual proportions and spacing, confirming that the rhythm of the pattern would read as intended at the scale of the finished ring. And the overall proportions of the ring — the relationship between the 5 carat elongated cushion, the hidden halo, and the detailed band — needed to be seen together before any irreversible production decision was made.
Digital renderings of the ring were produced from multiple angles — front, side, and angled views — giving the client an accurate and detailed visualization of the finished piece in every relevant perspective. The position of the hidden halo was confirmed beneath the cushion. The alternating stone pattern on the shank was verified as producing exactly the visual rhythm the design called for. The overall proportions were approved as balanced and exactly right for a stone of this size.
The design was approved. Production began.
Cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold, Set by Hand
With the CAD/CAM model approved, the ring was cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold — and the choice serves this ring in every respect.
Yellow gold brings a warmth and richness to a cushion-cut diamond that feels entirely natural — the softness of the cushion shape and the warmth of the yellow gold sharing a quality of approachability and depth that makes the combination immediately appealing. Against 14 karat yellow gold, the elongated cushion's brilliant faceting produces a light return that reads as warm and rich rather than cool and clinical — a quality that suits an engagement ring beautifully. The hidden halo, in yellow gold, adds its glow from beneath the stone with the same warmth, the alternating round and marquise accent stones along the shank contributing their own sparkle in a metal that makes every reflection feel alive.
At 14 karats, the gold delivers the structural integrity the ring requires — holding the hidden halo diamonds, the center stone prongs, and the detailed alternating accent stones on the shank securely and precisely through years of daily wear.
Once cast and polished, the ring went to our bench jeweler for the careful hand-setting of every stone — the 5 carat elongated cushion placed at the crown with the precision the stone and the hidden halo beneath it required, the hidden halo diamonds set individually to form the continuous glowing border beneath the cushion, and the alternating round and marquise accent stones placed along the shank one by one in the specific pattern the design called for. Each stone was secured individually, positioned precisely, and verified for light return and stability before the ring moved to final polishing.
Final Polish and Inspection
With all stones set, the ring underwent a final round of polishing — the 14 karat yellow gold brought to the warm, rich finish that gives the metal its depth and character, the smooth curves of the band refined to a flawless surface, and every detail of the ring inspected for the quality of craftsmanship a piece of this ambition demands.
The hidden halo was inspected from the side to confirm its glowing effect beneath the cushion was precisely as the digital rendering had shown. The alternating round and marquise pattern on the shank was verified for rhythm and symmetry. The 5 carat elongated cushion was checked for security, alignment, and the brilliance of its light return in the yellow gold setting. Every element of the finished ring was confirmed against the approved digital model.
The ring that left our hands was the ring the client had approved — transformed from an online inspiration into something built specifically, precisely, and entirely from scratch around a 5 carat elongated cushion-cut lab grown diamond that no other ring in the world was made to hold.
The Finished Ring
The completed 14 Karat Yellow Gold 5ct Elongated Cushion Hidden Halo Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Ring is a piece that began online and became irreplaceable. The 5 carat elongated cushion sits at the crown with the warm, sweeping brilliance the cut is known for — its generous face-up surface and brilliant faceting making it immediately commanding in any light. The hidden halo glows beneath it in profile, adding brilliance and lift that rewards the eye without interrupting the clean elegance of the cushion viewed from above. The alternating round and marquise accent stones run along the yellow gold shank in a pattern that is as distinctive as everything above it.
It was inspired by something seen online. It was made for someone specific. The difference between those two things is the entire story of this ring.
