Something More Than a Diamond Ring: The 14 Karat Two-Tone Lab Grown Marquise Engagement Ring

A Vision With More Than One Surprise

The Making of a Custom 14 Karat Two-Tone Lab Grown Marquise Engagement Ring with Princess-Cut Accents and Hidden Alexandrites

Some engagement ring designs are built on a single strong idea. This one was built on several — layered together with the kind of specificity that produces a ring genuinely unlike anything else in the room. A 2 carat marquise lab grown diamond as the centerpiece. Princess-cut accent stones running along the shank. And tucked into the head of the ring, flanking the marquise on each side: two lab grown alexandrites, their color-changing quality hidden in plain sight, waiting to reveal themselves to anyone who looks closely enough.

It is a ring with secrets. And it is one of the most thoughtfully conceived pieces we have built at AJ's Jewelry.

Seeing the Stone First

Before the design conversation began in earnest, the client came into our store to see the center stone in person. We had the 2 carat marquise lab grown diamond ready — and seeing it face up in real light, its elongated brilliant faceting producing the sweeping, dramatic sparkle the marquise is known for, made the direction of everything that followed feel entirely natural.

The marquise is a shape with genuine presence. Its pointed ends and elongated silhouette create a stone that appears larger than its carat weight on the finger, while its brilliant faceting ensures that size comes with extraordinary light return. At 2 carats, the marquise lab grown diamond at the center of this ring is a stone that commands attention from the moment it enters a room.

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds — chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined stones, graded by the same gemological standards. The decision to choose a lab grown center stone reflects the same philosophy that guided every element of this ring: maximum quality and presence, with intention behind every choice.

The stone was examined, appreciated, and confirmed. From that moment, the ring was designed around it.

Designing the Ring, Right Then and There

The moment the center stone was chosen, we sat down together and began designing — and the conversation that followed was one of the more creatively rich ones we have had in the design process.

The client wanted princess-cut accent stones set along the shank, their square brilliant faceting creating a continuous frame of sparkle that would extend the visual reach of the ring below the marquise without competing with it. It is a detail that rewards the eye as it travels from center stone to band — the shank alive with brilliance that feels like an extension of the marquise rather than a separate element.

Then came the alexandrites. Two lab grown alexandrites, set into the head of the ring flanking the marquise center stone — a detail that most people looking at the ring would not immediately identify, but that would reveal itself with extraordinary effect under different lighting conditions. Alexandrite's color-change property — shifting from green in daylight to purple or red under incandescent light — means that the head of this ring looks different depending on where it is worn and what light it is worn in. It is a surprise built into the design, visible only to those who look closely or catch the ring in the right light.

The two-tone gold structure was established as the foundation that would hold all of these elements together in a cohesive, considered whole.

Built in 3D Using CAD/CAM Technology

With the design fully established in store, our team built the ring as a precise three-dimensional digital model using CAD — computer-aided design — software. For a ring with this many distinct elements operating simultaneously, the digital design stage was essential to ensuring they would all work together as a unified composition rather than a collection of competing features.

The CAD model resolved every detail: the marquise setting and its relationship to the alexandrites flanking it in the head, the placement and size of the princess-cut accent stones along the shank, the two-tone gold structure and how the transition between metals would read in the finished piece, and the overall proportions of the ring from every angle. Digital renderings were produced and presented to the client for review — allowing every element of the design to be seen, evaluated, and confirmed before a single piece of metal was cast.

The client reviewed the renderings, confirmed that every surprise and every detail was exactly as intended, and approved the design for production. From that point, CAM — computer-aided manufacturing — technology guided the casting process with the same precision the digital model had established.

The Two-Tone Structure: A Design Decision With Purpose

The two-tone construction of this ring is not simply an aesthetic choice — it is a design decision that serves the ring's layered composition in specific and considered ways.

14 Karat White Gold for the head and stone settings allows the marquise lab grown diamond and the lab grown alexandrites to read with maximum clarity and color intensity. The cool, bright tone of white gold provides a neutral backdrop for the diamond's colorless brilliance and the alexandrites' color-change phenomenon — neither element is shifted or warmed by the metal beneath it, both are presented in their most accurate and most vivid optical state.

14 Karat Yellow Gold for the shank and band introduces warmth into the composition, grounding the ring in a richness that balances the cool precision of the white gold head above it. The yellow gold shank also provides the ideal setting environment for the princess-cut accent stones — their brilliant faceting catching the warmth of the metal and adding a depth and richness to the shank's sparkle that white gold alone would not achieve.

Together, the two tones create a ring that has visual depth and movement — the eye traveling from the warm sparkle of the yellow gold shank to the cool, color-rich presence of the white gold head with a sense of transition that makes the ring interesting from every angle and in every light.

Set by Hand, Finished to Standard

With the casting complete, the ring went to our bench jeweler for the hand-setting of every stone — the 2 carat marquise lab grown diamond placed at the center of the head with the precision the shape demands, the two lab grown alexandrites set into the head on each side with care for their color-change orientation, and the princess-cut accent stones set individually along the shank in the continuous line of brilliance the design called for.

Once all stones were set, the ring underwent a final round of polishing — the white gold and yellow gold each brought to their respective finishes, the two-tone contrast sharpened and clarified by the polish, and every element of the ring reviewed for the quality of craftsmanship the piece demanded. The marquise's prong settings were inspected for security and elegance, the alexandrites checked from multiple angles and in multiple lighting conditions to confirm their color-change phenomenon was presenting fully, and the princess-cut shank stones verified for alignment and brilliance.

The ring that left our hands was the ring the client had approved in the digital renderings — every surprise intact, every detail executed without compromise.

The Finished Ring

The completed 14 Karat Two-Tone Lab Grown Marquise Engagement Ring is a piece that reveals itself gradually — and that is entirely by design. The 2 carat marquise lab grown diamond commands the crown with the dramatic, elongated brilliance the shape is known for. The princess-cut accent stones run along the yellow gold shank in a continuous frame of sparkle that draws the eye all the way to the band. And in the head, flanking the marquise on each side, the two lab grown alexandrites wait — green in daylight, shifting toward purple or red under incandescent light, their color-change quality a detail that makes the ring different every time it is seen in a different place.

It is a two-tone ring that uses both metals with purpose. A marquise ring that chose its accents with intention. And a piece that, unlike most engagement rings, holds a surprise in the design that the wearer will notice — and that others will discover — for years.
