A Ring Built for the Detail-Oriented
The Making of a Custom 14 Karat White Gold 1.70ct Radiant Cut Natural Diamond Hidden Halo Engagement Ring
Some clients arrive knowing they want bold. Others arrive knowing they want elegant. This client arrived knowing they wanted both — and the specific combination of features they brought to the conversation made clear from the very first exchange that this was a client who had thought carefully about every element of the ring before setting foot in our store. The result is a piece that rewards that level of consideration at every scale, from the commanding presence of a 1.70 carat radiant-cut natural diamond at its crown to the diamond-set prongs that ensure no surface of the ring goes without brilliance.
Seeing the Stone First
Before the design was discussed in any detail, the client came into our store to see the center stone in person. We had the 1.70 carat radiant-cut natural diamond ready — and seeing it face up in real light made the direction of the ring that would be built around it immediately clear.
The radiant cut occupies a compelling position in the diamond vocabulary — a shape that combines the clean rectangular or square outline of the emerald cut with the brilliant faceting of a round diamond. Where the emerald cut reflects light in broad, calm planes, the radiant cut's brilliant facet pattern breaks it into the same explosive sparkle a round diamond produces, but delivered through the geometry of a rectangular form. The result is a stone that has architectural presence and maximum brilliance simultaneously — the best qualities of both worlds in a single cut.
At 1.70 carats, the radiant cut natural diamond for this ring carries genuine presence on the finger. Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years beneath the earth's surface — each one a geological event of extraordinary duration and complexity, graded by the same standards that have defined diamond quality for generations. The client examined the stone, confirmed its fire and brilliance in person, and the design conversation began in earnest.
Designing the Ring, Right Then and There
The moment the center stone was chosen, we sat down together and worked through every element of the ring — and the client's design requests were specific enough that the conversation moved quickly from concept to detail.
Four elements defined the brief from the start.
The first was the radiant-cut natural diamond itself — commanding, brilliant, and demanding of a setting designed to honor both qualities equally.
The second was a hidden halo beneath the center stone — a border of diamonds tucked beneath the crown of the radiant cut, invisible from above but glowing in profile, adding brilliance and perceived size to the center stone without interrupting the clean face-up view of the radiant's rectangular form. The hidden halo is a detail that demonstrates exactly the kind of considered restraint this design was built on — maximum effect, minimal intrusion.
The third was pavé-set diamonds along the shank — small diamonds set closely together across the band, creating a continuous surface of brilliance that extends the ring's light return from the center stone all the way down to the finger. On a ring with a radiant center and a hidden halo, a plain band would feel like an afterthought. The pavé shank ensures that the entire ring reads as a coherent, brilliance-forward composition from every angle.
The fourth — and the detail that makes this ring truly exceptional — was diamond-set prongs. Rather than leaving the prongs that hold the center stone as plain metal, the client specified that they be set with natural diamonds as well, adding an additional layer of brilliance at exactly the point where the eye naturally travels when looking at the ring. It is the kind of detail that a person wearing the ring notices every day and that anyone looking closely enough will immediately recognize as something extraordinary.
Built in 3D Using CAD/CAM Technology
With the design fully established in store, our team built the ring as a precise three-dimensional digital model using CAD/CAM — computer-aided design and manufacturing — technology. For a ring with this many distinct elements operating simultaneously and with this much precision required in the placement of diamonds across every surface, the digital design stage was not a preliminary step. It was where the ring was proven before it was built.
The CAD model resolved every specification in three dimensions: the hidden halo's position and diamond spacing beneath the radiant cut, the pavé coverage and stone placement along the shank, the diamond-set prong configuration and how it would interact visually with the center stone above, and the overall proportions of the ring from every angle. A high-resolution digital rendering of the finished piece was produced and presented to the client for review — showing the ring in accurate detail from the front, the side, and at an angle, with every diamond accounted for and every surface of the ring represented exactly as it would appear in white gold.
The client reviewed the rendering in detail, confirmed that every element was exactly as specified, and approved the design for production. From that point, the CAM technology guided the manufacturing process with the same precision the digital model had established.
Cast in 14 Karat White Gold, Set by Hand
With the digital design approved, the ring was cast in 14 Karat White Gold — a choice that serves every element of this design with precision and purpose.
White gold's cool, bright tone is the natural partner for a ring built on the principle of maximum brilliance. The neutral backdrop of white gold allows the diamonds to read with their full optical character — no warmth from the metal shifting the tone of the stones, no color from the setting competing with the radiance of the natural diamonds at every surface. The radiant cut center stone, the hidden halo, the pavé shank, and the diamond-set prongs all face up with the clarity and brilliance white gold makes possible, each element contributing to a composition that is united by a single consistent quality: light.
At 14 karats, the white gold provides the structural integrity a ring of this complexity demands. The density of diamond coverage across the shank, prongs, and hidden halo requires a setting that holds every stone securely through years of daily wear without compromise.
Once cast and polished, the ring went to our bench jeweler for the hand-setting of every diamond — a process that, given the scope of stone coverage across this ring, required extraordinary patience and precision. The 1.70 carat radiant cut natural diamond was placed at the crown. The hidden halo diamonds were set individually around the rectangular perimeter of the stone's base. The pavé diamonds were set across the shank in the continuous coverage the design specified. And the prong diamonds were placed and secured at the four points that hold the center stone — each one contributing its own brilliant light to the composition at the most visible possible location.
Final Polish and Inspection
With every stone set, the ring underwent a final round of polishing — the 14 karat white gold brought to the bright, reflective finish that makes the metal's cool tone most present and allows the diamond coverage across every surface to read with maximum contrast and definition. The hidden halo was inspected from the side to confirm its effect beneath the radiant cut was exactly as the digital rendering had shown. The pavé coverage on the shank was verified for uniformity and brilliance. The diamond-set prongs were inspected individually for security and alignment. And the radiant cut natural diamond at the center was confirmed for position, stability, and the full expression of its brilliant faceting.
The ring that left our hands was the ring the client had approved in the digital rendering — every diamond in place, every surface accounted for, every element of the design executed exactly as specified.
The Finished Ring
The completed 14 Karat White Gold 1.70ct Radiant Cut Natural Diamond Hidden Halo Engagement Ring is a piece that was designed with one governing principle: no surface of this ring should be without brilliance. From the commanding radiant cut natural diamond at its crown, to the hidden halo glowing beneath it in profile, to the pavé diamonds running the length of the shank, to the natural diamonds set into the prongs that hold the center stone — every element of this ring contributes light, and the sum of those contributions is a ring that reads as extraordinary from every angle and in every light it is ever worn in.
It is a ring that rewards detail. Built by a client who noticed all of them. And crafted by a team that honored every single one.
