Some pieces of jewelry carry more than beauty — they carry history. When a client came to us at AJ’s Jewelry with a dream of wearing their family’s legacy on their finger, we knew this project would be something truly special. Their goal was clear: transform a cherished family heirloom ring into a one-of-a-kind signet ring, engraved with their family crest, to be passed down for generations to come.
The client brought in a family heirloom ring that had been in their possession for years. The ring itself was a beautiful piece, but its top portion was set with diamonds that needed to be removed in order to create the flat signet plate required for engraving. With great care, our jewelers delicately extracted each diamond, preserving them safely so they could be used or set in a future piece. The ring’s band and overall structure were retained, honoring the integrity of the original heirloom while giving it an entirely new purpose.
The family crest itself lived on an unexpected canvas — a ceramic bell that had been in the family for years. Rather than work from a degraded or low-quality reproduction, we took a high-resolution photograph of the crest directly from the bell, capturing every fine detail of the design: the curves, the linework, the heraldic elements that made it uniquely theirs.
From that photograph, our team carefully traced and rebuilt the image into a clean, precise vector file. This process — converting a photographic image into scalable vector art — was essential to ensuring the crest could be reproduced faithfully at any size without losing definition. Every line was refined, every element proportioned correctly, until the digital version was an accurate and engravable representation of the original.
With the ring prepared and the vector art finalized, we engraved the family crest directly onto the solid gold plate of the signet ring. The result is a crisp, deeply engraved impression — sharp enough to serve as a wax seal, meaningful enough to become a new family heirloom in its own right.
What began as an heirloom ring and a ceramic bell became something the client will wear every day and one day pass on to the next generation.
